Sinai Journeys is keen to promote sustainable travel and holidays in Sinai whilst at the same time taking care to protect the fragile environment. Through projects facilitated by the Makhad Trust, very many Sinai gardens have been restored, enabling their Bedouin owners to offer over-night eco-tourism accommodation. This helps the garden owners make more use of their gardens and helps to bring prosperity to the region. Care is taken to ensure that building work (walls, dams and compost toilets) uses natural materials and is done with sensitivity to the beauty of the landscape.
Most of our working journeys involve building a small dam, which is a great asset in a region where water supplies are small and rain is scarce. By damming small ravines we can increase the quantity of water that permeates the land, increasing the level of the water table for up to four months. This, in turn, increases water availability to Bedouin orchard garden owners, enabling them to plant more trees and grow vegetables. In addition, the increased availability of water in the dams, has had a positive impact on insect numbers and on birdlife and migrating birds. When water is available there is life.
