Forthcoming Journeys

Makhad Journeys has been running one or more Working Journeys annually, for people to come and experience life with the Bedouin and to contribute to well being of everyone by increasing access to water.

After a pause due to the pandemic, Working Journeys resumed in Spring 2023, with two journeys.    The focus of these joureys is the building of dams to provide more water for the mountain gardens.

Direct flights to Sharm El Sheikh in Sinai can be booked from Luton, Gatwick, Bristol and Manchester to Sharm El Sheikh on EasyJet.

Future Journeys – We intend to run regular journeys during the Autumn and Spring each year, when the weather is not too hot and not too cold. Please do let us know if you are interested as we keep waiting lists.  We can also arrange  bespoke journeys for your family or group of friends.

Rachel’s Dam Building Journey 21 to 28 September 2024 Led by two trustees from the Makhad Trust, this week long journey will include visiting a Red Sea resort, low level mountain trekking, building a dam with the Bedouin and a special visit to the monastery. It will conclude with a night back at the beach after the dam build is complete.

Mountain and Desert Journey – 5 to 15 October 2024 Led by the Project Manager of the Makhad Trust, this two week journey will include swimming in the Red Sea, visiting St Katherine’s monastery, trekking into the high mountains, assisting the Bedouin with building a dam, trekking up Mount Sinai and a retreat in the desert.

Dam Costs – There are costs involved in building a dam including hiring builders, cement mixers (human ones), cement, buckets and tools, use of a generator to pump water, and camels to transport cement tools and equipment. These are not included in the journey price. We ask the journey participants to raise the money for the dam collectively or individually by sponsorship or donations from friends and supporters.

Bespoke Journeys We can organise bespoke journeys, for example for a group of friends or to undertake activities such as a retreat. We can vary the destinations, the time spent at a seaside resort or in the desert, or the activities. However, the aim for Sinai Journeys is to support the Bedouin, preferably through water restoration projects, so there needs to be an element of work on a project as part of the journey. For more information and options available please email us.

Supporting the Bedouin Over 60% of the cost of the trips directly contributes towards sustaining the Bedouin community in various ways, including paying for the many services they provide and supporting the charitable work of the Makhad Trust. Any work you undertake whilst on your journey also contributes directly to the wellbeing of the Bedouin.

You can book these journeys by phone, by email or by post. Email enquiries@sinaijourneys.org, or helencranston@sinaijourneys.org and racheldevas@sinaijourneys.org
